« Return to babysitter vs. childcare facility

childcare options

There are a variety of options for childcare, and you will need to decide on the type of care you need and, of course, how much you can afford.

Child Care Centers for infant care are typically 1 childcare provider to 4-6 infants (under age of 2) and can run you around $400-500/week or more. Larger group setting, large germ pool. Often high turnover of caregivers, and set time schedule (example: 7:30AM-5:30AM), CPR & First Aid, regulated by Community Care Licensing, a branch of Dept. of Social Services.

Family Child Care Homes are in a provider's home with a ratio of up to 1 caregiver to 4 infants (under age 2), may have more with older children - overall 1 caregiver to 6 children. Smaller group setting, smaller germ pool, consistent caregiver, time schedule varies pending on facility, CPR & First Aid, regulated by Community Care Licensing. Fees vary, often most affordable option for group childcare. ($250-$500/wk)

Au Pair - regulated by the US State Department. Live-in child care, $320/week, host young woman/man between the age 18-26 from overseas (J-1 visa), flexible scheduling, offer upto 45 hours week of childcare - anytime you need it. Cultural exchange, same fees for all the children in your family, fully screened, trained, have international driver's license.

Nanny/Babysitter, varies on experience, not regulated. Professional Nanny will be the most expensive childcare option. Rates vary. Sometimes you can set the schedule, live-in & live-out options, in your home. (minimum wage-$20/hr), some families share a nanny between 2-3 families.

I hope this helps!
