Time out for Toddlers?

My daughter turned 2 in June and as she gets older, there seem to be more reasons to put her in timeout. Problem is, so far I don't feel like it has been all that effective. When she is very upset about timeout (which is pretty much every time) she won't sit in a chair, or in any type of designated place... so I end up putting her in her crib. I was wondering if any of you have found timeouts to be particularly successful for your 2 year old, and if so, how you go about it.

I found this article recently and was surprised that they recommend timeout only for 1 or 2 minutes at most. At the end of 1 minute Ella is usually screaming her head off and it doesn't seem like she is in any place to change her behavior or calm down.

Just wondering what you guys thought about all this.

Suggestion

I have heard, through the pediatrician that the amount of time that you put a kid in time - out should equal the number of years they are. So Ella would get 2 minutes for being 2 years. "Experts" say that kids don't have long enough memories for time out to be longer than that b/c they don't recall what the punishment is for after their age / minutes.

We have been trying time-out now that we know the twins truly understand "no" and does things anyway. We have been talking about setting up the pack and play as time out so that they doesn't associate her crib as punishment. My pediatrician said to be firm, fast, and then leave the room. Ultimately, they want to be around you and have your attention.

I have adapted the timeout strategy for the classroom over the years- it has been most effective to communicate with kids of all ages in small increments of time.
